Dark rumors were circulating at this year’s Great Waters Fly Fishing Expo. Despite seasonal temperatures and minimal runoff nobody was doing very well fishing the trout streams in the St.Croix Valley. A cold spring and numerous high water events in 2014 were to blame for decreased fish counts. Other commitments kept me from fishing in March this year so by the time April rolled around I was ready, and so were the fish, at least on the Rush River. I virtually had the place to myself every time I went. The weather was nice, the river was clear, the BWO hatches occurred, and the fish responded to them. I personally caught many larger than average trout nymph fishing. With that being said, something is different and I cant put my finger on it.
